At last - we can flush without worry

Today we finished hooking in to the sewer line. No more septic tank - no more worries. The picture below shows our contractor smashing the tank.

We had some left over gravel and regraded our road and filled in the potholes. All of the neighbors are now happy.

Philosophy

I am reading a new book "Hegemony or Survival - America's Quest for Global Dominance" by Noam Chomsky. This starts out with 4 intriguing paragraphs:

"A few years ago one of the great figures in contemporary biology, Ernst Mary...Speculated that the human form of intellectual organization may be favored by (natural) selection. The history of life on Earth, he wrote refutes the claim that "it is better to be smart then to be stupid," at least judging by biological success: beetles and bacteria, for example, are vastly more successful then humans in terms of survial. He also made the rater somber observation that the "average life expectancy of a species is about 100,000 years.""

Chomsky continues by stating that:

"We are entering a period of human history that may provide an answer to the question of whether it is better to be smart the stupid. The most hopeful prospect is that the question will not be answered: if it receives a definite answer, that answer can only be that humans were a kind of "biological error," using their allotted 100,000 years to destroy themselves and, in the process, much else."

WOW - this prompted me to sit up and ponder life over a sleepless night!

Fishing on the Snake in Wilson

I went fishing on Sunday with Charlotte, Mark and Lizzy H. & Justin. We enjoyed a sunny fall day and caught a few trout. Justin caught a 14 incher and the rest of us managed to tackle a few smaller fish. We fished off the Westbank about 1-2 miles South of the Wilson bridge.

Life in Jackson

I went for a great 16 mile road bike ride after work today. I rode out to the villiage (ski area) and then doubled back to the Wilson post office before returning home.

Everytime I pass the villiage I always look-up at the hobacks in amazement. They are the two mountians on the left in the picutre below.

It seems to take forever to bike past the hobacks. They are massive and one of the best parts of skiing the villiage after a dump of cold smoke Wyoming powder.

It's almost winter...

Reading Marathon

As the weather has been cooling off I have been cranking through a serious dose of books from the Teton County Library. Currently, I have finished 4.5 books in the past 4 weeks.

Quick notes on 2:

Botany of Desire -- M. Polland

A good read, would be especially interesting to a gardener. The piece of non-fiction investigates how human interaction has helped to evolve a selection of plants and how these plants have impacted human life. The potato chapter is especially interesting due to my close proximity to Idaho and the Spud.

Three Billion New Capitalists -- C. Prestowitz

Describes how the US will face a world of challenge from the East over the next 10-20 years. Basically, the premise is that 3 million people in China and India are better educated and more motivated then the majority of workers in America.

I work daily with a team in India and the above statement is true. We need to continue to build our skills to compete.

Our new table

Our friend Hayden hooked us up with a new table for our sun room. The table has provided a wonderful location to work and eat informal meals in this dazzling area of our house. Hayden runs a cool store called Festive Living in Victor, ID.

The table is made from solid rosewood which I was unware of the fact that it could grow to produce boards that are a few inches thick. I guess the rose wood growth is stunted in Wyoming due to the short growing season.
